A critical crossroad, where modern demands meet legacy boundaries

Cosmoz was built on an MS SQL Server database hosted on Azure, initially optimized for transactional workloads, and working well delivering data as static reports. As customer needs evolved toward interactive and customizable analytics, Neovici brought in Sisense to embed dashboards, delivering dynamic, interactive, and customizable analytics within Cosmoz. 

As these new analytics became more integral, these new analytics capabilities started to require more intensive read-heavy operations and complex queries on large datasets. In its first iteration, these analytics processes and workloads were added to run on the existing database. But, as these new and more complex processes continued to run on the same database, Neovici started to see declining performance.

Neovici approached QBeeQ on a recommendation from their Sisense account team. QBeeQ worked together with Neovici Solutions Architect, Gustav Ösgård, and his team to identify the root cause, propose recommendations, including options to explore a more modern data warehouse solution. 

QBeeQ conducted a deep review of the existing MS SQL structures and architecture, identifying key issues rooted in the MS SQL Server environment. Complex SQL views were processing massive volumes of data, leading to significant performance bottlenecks. And the server itself was not equipped to handle modern data warehousing tasks. Continuing to scale the MS SQL infrastructure was no longer a viable option. Neovici had already reached the limits of what MS SQL could handle, and further scaling would require long downtimes and significant infrastructure costs, making it slow, expensive, and difficult to manage. And while there were no inherent issues with Sisense, the upstream inefficiencies cascaded to the BI layer, manifesting as slow ElastiCube build times and long data refresh cycles. 

As a company committed to continuous innovation, regularly introducing new features and capabilities, Neovici saw this as a tipping point.

Laying the groundwork for sustainable performance and growth

QBeeQ understood that Neovici needed a sustainable solution that would regain, maintain, and improve performance while also allowing them to scale their analytics offering and support the growing demand for customized experiences from their diverse client base. The choice was made to migrate problematic data structures and critical pipelines to Snowflake.

The first phase of the migration was delivered in one month, which included:

• Azure Data Factory (ADF) processes were built, pushing files to Azure Blob Storage, to stage the data before moving to Snowflake

• A Snowflake warehouse was designed with a schema to support the new architecture

• The full data pipeline was rebuilt in Snowflake, using Snowpipe to automate file ingestion and Tasks to schedule and manage transformations

• SQL views were refactored to eliminate unnecessary complexity and better optimized for use within Snowflake 

Once the new architecture was in place, the existing ElastiCubes in Sisense were updated to connect to Snowflake and its new data structures. This simply meant reconnecting the tables in each ElastiCube to the new Snowflake source. QBeeQ continues to work closely with Neovici, collaborating to provide ongoing identification of bottlenecks affecting performance and optimizations.
